Know Before You Go

YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO SWIM

DON’T FORGET - STAY OUT OF THE CENTER OF THE CHANNEL

STAY CLOSE TO THE BOATS GOING DOWN THE CHANNEL. ALL BOATS HAVE THE RIGHT AWAY! THE CENTER OF THE CHANNEL IS FOR BOATS ONLY! THIS IS NOT ONLY FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION BUT ALSO TO HELP THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL RENTAL EQUIPMENT

THIS INCLUDES THE BOARD, PADDLE, PFD, NOISE MAKING DEVICE AND LIGHTS WHEN APPLICABLE. YOU MUST RETURN THE PADDLE. PFD, NOISE MAKING DEVICE AND LIGHT TO THE PRO SUP SHOP BOOTH AFTER YOUR RENTAL. IF YOU HAVE A COLLISION OR DING A BOARD, PLEASE TELL A PSS STAFF MEMBER SO WE CAN TAKE IT OUT OF ROTATION UNTIL IT’S REPAIRED.

ALWAYS KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TIME

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME OVER YOUR RENTAL PERIOD OVERAGES WILL BE CHARGED IN 15 MINUTE INCREMENTS. PLEASE KEEP TRACK OF YOUR TIME AND ALLOW FOR WIND CHANGES THAT MAY AFFECT YOUR RETURN TIME.

KNOWING YOUR STRENGTH & LIMITS IS IMPORTANT

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY: HOWEVER FAR YOU PADDLE, YOU HAVE TO PADDLE BACK THE SAME DISTANCE & WEATHER CONDITIONS MAY CHANGE. IF YOU’RE A NEW PADDLER YOU’LL WANT TO STAY IN AND AROUND THE D BASIN. OFTEN TIMES IT’S MUCH HARDER TO PADDLE IN THE MAIN CHANNEL, ESPECIALLY AS YOU GET CLOSER TO THE SEA WALL.

PLEASE DO NOT STAND ON THE BOARD UNTIL YOU’RE IN TEN FEET OF WATER

THE FIN IS THE MOST FRAGILE PART OF THE BOARD. NEVER STAND ON THE BOARD OUT OF WATER OR IN VERY SHALLOW WATER, YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGES.

MAKE SURE TO KNOW THE WIND + SAFETY POSITION

IF YOU DON’T KNOW, ASK US -- WE’RE HERE TO HELP! IF YOU GET FATIGUED ASSUME THE SAFETY POSITION. IN SEVERE WINDS, CHOKE DOWN ON YOUR PADDLE FOR MORE FORCE PER STROKE.

BE WELL NOURISHED & HYDRATED

IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO BE WELL NOURISHED AND HYDRATED WHILE PADDLING TO ENSURE THAT YOU DON’T “RUN OUT OF STEAM.” MAKE SURE THAT YOU BRING WATER, AND A SNACK IF YOU PLAN ON BEING ON THE WATER FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD.

PREPARE

Check your equipment, wind, weather, and a map before launching.

PROTECT

Hydrate, stretch, and apply sun screen before you go. A sun shirt is recommended in very sunny days.

PLAN

Make sure you and a buddy know your route and plan. Consider carrying a map of the marina so you don’t get lost.

STAY LEGAL

Always paddle with a PFD (Personal Flotation Device), whistle and light. If you paddle out of the Marina, it’s a good idea to bring a leash!

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Have a 360 degree awareness. Steer clear of obstacles, debris and other vessels.

PADDLE SAFE AND BE COURTEOUS

Don’t paddle down the center of the channel, keep to the right, and always give boaters right of way.

AVOID MARINE CREATURES

Though ocean life is beautiful, it is also unpredictable. Choose an area to paddle away from marine creatures and shuffle your feet when entering the lagoon to avoid stepping on stingrays.

STAY BALANCED

Keep your eyes on the horizon and your core tight to help keep you stable while on your stand up paddle board. High winds catch you off guard, boat wakes, fatigued? Assume the emergency position, drop to your knees to lower your center of gravity and paddle through.

MAKE SURE TO CONTROL YOUR BOARD

Learn to turn, stop and speed up in the lagoon before you head out into the Marina.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Ask a Pro about important skills needed to paddle safe! A Prosupshop lesson with a Pro will teach you the basics of SUP safety and techniques to get you paddling like a PRO in no time.

PETS! - KEEP YOUR BESTIE SAFE

Pets need to be in a life vest with a handle so you can get them out of the water if they jump or fall in.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET

Wear booties when the water is cold and if you’re in for a long paddle session, don’t forget to wiggle your toes to keep your circulation flowing.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Pro SUP Shop is located at the end of D basin. Be sure you know which channel takes you back to the PSS shop. When choosing a landmark, make sure to choose one that won’t float, drive or swim away. Mothers Beach to main channel jetty near Bay entrance and back is 4 miles! If you make it there remember you still have to paddle two miles home! It takes the average paddler about 1.5 hours. You are responsible for keeping track of time. Bring a waterproof watch or ask someone on the water. All SUP rentals will be closed in 15+ knots of wind.
